YEAR-END TRIP—-WASHINGTON DC

The year-end trip this year will be going to Washington DC.  Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey regarding timings for the trip. The overwhelming majority of respondents indicated that they would prefer the Thursday morning departure.  The buses will be departing on Thursday May 18th at 7:00 AM and returning on Monday evening May 22.

The cost of the trip will be $225.00. This will cover the cost of transportation, accommodations, entrance to all attractions and all meals.  It is recommended that cadets do bring some spending money (in US Dollars) for souvenirs and any snacks or treats they may wish to purchase.  We will not have the capability to exchange Canadian Dollars for US once we have left, so it is the responsibility of each individual to ensure they have sufficient US currency

As mentioned previously, cadets can lower the price of their trip by getting out and tagging this coming weekend.  You will earn 10% of your tagging total off the price of your trip (this will be rounded to the nearest $5.00 to keep our accounting easier).

Cadets who were born in Canada will not require a passport as long as they have their Birth Certificate with them.

Cadets who were born outside of Canada will require their Birth Certificate and passport to attend this trip.

At this time, we are not aware of any potential issues with cadets crossing the border, but will try to keep up with any changes that may happen.

A sign up list will be posted at the school tomorrow night.  If we have more cadets sign up than we have spots for, we will prioritize by using the latest achievement list.

We will let parents of those cadets attending know the cost of their trip as soon as possible after tag days so they can have payment ready starting the week of May 1st.  As we have mentioned, we now have the capability to accept payment by all major credit cards, however this service is not free so there will be a $5.00 surcharge for payment for the trip by credit card.

Thoughts from the Elliptical

Wow! What an extremely busy weekend for the Squadron.

We had cadets flying in Oshawa, shooting at the Provincial Cadet Marksmanship Competition in Trenton, and competing in a Band and Drill Competition in Kingston.  As much as I’d like to be everywhere at once, it’s not possible, so I found myself making the trip down to Kingston to watch both our Drill Team and Band compete at the Eastern Ontario Area Band and Drill Competition.  It is great to see so many parents make the trip as well.  We certainly had a great booster section watching both competitions, and what a show they got!  I have been doing this cadet thing as an officer for over 25 years now and I must say, it just doesn’t get much better than what I witnessed yesterday.  Although we don’t have the results from the competition yet, I will let the Squadron know as soon as I find out if they are advancing to the provincial level competition at the end of May.

The shooting competition was a two day event, many of our shooters are also on the band or drill team, so they had some very long days.  I am very pleased to share the news that one of the three teams that we sent to this competition placed third in the province and will be going to Gimli Manitoba to represent Ontario at the National Cadet Marksmanship Competition in May.

I would like to congratulate every cadet who has put so much work into these teams this year.  It is not easy competing at this level and it certainly shows a great deal of dedication to their chosen fields.

I would also like to thank and congratulate all of the staff who have put in countless hours getting the cadets ready for this competition season.  It certainly is a team effort from those who teach from the very basic level to those that hone the skills to their sharpest level. Also all the behind the scenes people that we don’t always associate with these teams.  The administration staff who make sure all the paperwork is current and submitted, the supply staff who try to make sure the cadets are looking their sharpest and every parent that has driven those extra days to get their cadet to the seemingly endless practices.  BZ to all.

I just want to remind the cadets and their parents of the importance of the Tag-Days we have next weekend.  The money raised on this weekend is what enables us to operate the Squadron and do a lot of the extras that mean so much to the cadets.  If you have signed up for a shift, please make sure you are at the right place at the right time.  If  you miss some of your shift, you never know who you may have missed asking for a donation.

I would hope that just knowing the importance of this to the Squadron would be enough to motivate you all to get out for as many shifts as possible, but we have thrown in the incentive of reducing the price of your year end trip through tagging so I would like to think you will all be eager participants.  Just a reminder that the top fund-raiser of the weekend will receive their trip free of charge.

Please also remember that you are representing the Squadron and the impression you make on people is the thought that they will have of the entire Squadron.

That’s all for now.

Stay Safe and Have a Great Week
