Airport Open House

Oshawa Municipal Airport

From April to October, Ontario communities open their doors to some of the most intriguing and charming heritage sites. The Ontario Heritage Trust invites people to experience with no admission fee these otherwise private or inaccessible treasures first-hand. In Oshawa, many facilities including the Oshawa airport were open for the public to visit. This past Saturday our Squadron participated in the program by setting up a display about our Squadron’s activities in the main entrance of the Terminal Building at the Oshawa Airport. There were also numerous aviation organizations and businesses who set up displays and exhibits in the various buildings and hangers at the airport.  Besides all of the exhibits there were also a number of interesting aircraft on display  including, home built aircraft, an air ambulance and a new J Model Hercules  which was flown in from Trenton by 436 Squadron RCAF.

Our Display

One of the most  interesting home built aircraft  on display was this 4 place aircraft which was built by a local resident.

As one can see from the photo it is a unique design with the wing located to the rear of the aircraft.

Our cadets also had a chance to see the world from the pointy end of the Air Force Hercules which came in from Trenton.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award

This past weekend three of our cadets completed the expedition activity that is required for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. The cadets went to Algonquin Park where they hiked the old rail track and tower trail to the Mew Lake campground. They then hiked from Mew Lake to Rock Lake for a total of approximately 26km which was  about 6 km farther than required. To qualify for the award the cadets must also complete a  community service activity, be involved with some type of sports program and also have a special activity that they participate in. This is easy to commitment to fulfill with all of the activities going on in the Squadron.

The Duke of Edinburgh program is something that this squadron has been a part of for many years. In fact cadets have actually met the Duke of Edinburgh at a presentation ceremony in Scarborough Scarborough a number of years ago. It is an interesting and challenging program and cadets who would like to be involved should contact Capt. Chandler.

Thoughts From the Treadmill

Another week has gone by and with it another very busy time for all of the cadets and staff.  I would like to thank everyone who put in so much effort to make this weekend’s tag day such a success.  It never ceases to amaze me how many people actually come out and support the Squadron through their effort.  It has become somewhat of a tradition within the Squadron that tag days are also our time of getting some much needed housekeeping and maintenance done on the Squadron HQ.  Unfortunately so much of this work goes unnoticed unless you are there to see it.  But, we now have a much better home for the Squadron trailer with stone throughout the compound where we park it.  The rear door of the hall has a new concrete sill and some heavy duty weather stripping and the front hallway will be a lot less drafty due to the new weather stripping installed there and a bunch of paint was spread to help beautify the front hall as well as the dividers on the parade square which will soon house new photo boards.    All sounds rather simple, but with a building as old as Rotary Hall, nothing is ever as simple as it should be.  Thank you to all of the staff who dug in to do these much needed repairs, and still manage the operation of Tag-Days.

All of this is in addition to the original purpose of the weekend which was the Tag Days Fund-raising, this year we have had some special hurdles to overcome, the Oshawa Centre is undergoing renovations so we couldn’t tag there.  Some of our bigger stores which normally are great locations for us were doing their own fund-raising activities as well, so we couldn’t tag at these locations.  These factors led to a shortage of about 20 tagging locations.  As many of you encountered, there were also different groups canvassing for donations for their own needs.  As most of you have heard, all of the other groups are fair game in my books and I rely on our organization and the professionalism of our cadets to win the competition for the public’s donations.  I have to draw the line when it comes to a few different groups, I won’t have our cadets compete against the Veteran’s, the Salvation Army or as we saw this weekend, the Breast Cancer Society.  I am happy to report that all of the hard work by the cadets and staff paid off and we did manage to run a very successful weekend.

I’d like to throw a few numbers out for people to think about.  There are currently a total of 41 staff members in the Squadron, This includes everyone from myself to our newest Civilian Volunteers.  This weekend of fund-raising required over 500 person hours of labour to be successful.  This is before the time put in by Mr. Brooks from the Rotary Club of Oshawa, and all of the organizing that happens weeks in advance by other staff members.  All in all, a very impressive effort by a very dedicated staff.  I would especially like to thank Mr. Lloyd for his hard work in getting the weekend organized and running smoothly.  It always takes one person to watch all the fine details of a weekend like this and Mr. Lloyd did it fantastically.

Over the next few weeks we will see a team selection process take place for the Marksmanship team, we will also see an orienteering team compete for the first time in many years, I would like to wish all of the cadets involved lots of luck and encouragement in both of these activities.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Captain Christina Booth to the Squadron, She is going to be volunteering with the Squadron for a while.  Please take the opportunity to say hi to her when you see her around.

There will be no cadets next week due to Thanksgiving Day.  Please have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

That’s all for now.

Stay Safe and Have a Great Week.

Major Bliss

A Final Farewell Flight For the World’s Last Flying Vulcan

Vulcan XH558, the sole remaining airworthy example of Britain’s Cold War V-Force aircraft, has now flown her final flypast with the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows. In front of thousands of waving and cheering people at the Southport Air Show, the nine British-built Hawk aircraft formed a large V-shape with XH558 coming in behind to form a perfect triangle a fitting tribute to the delta planform that makes her instantly recognisable to the public.
