Tim Cards, Afghanistan and 151 Squadron

.

.

Those who follow our newsletter will remember this photo which  appeared in our newsletter when our cadets participated in a program to send Tim Cards to Canadians serving overseas in Afghanistan. The Squadron raised some $2,800 which allowed us to purchase 280 $10 Tim Cards which were then forwarded to the Canadian Forces. In the following months we received several emails from those who had a coffee on us. One of those emails came from Master Warrant Officer Carol Langelier, a company Sergeant Major with the #1 Service Battalion which is based in  Edmonton. His email from Afghanistan stated that this was his second mission to Afghanistan and that he was always amazed at the level of support that they received from Canadians. He stated that they were given the privilege to serve our country and that he could assure us that Canadian support made them even prouder to do so and that the cards were much appreciated by all. He commented that he would like to thank the Squadron for the Tim Cards that we sent overseas as a coffee from Tim Horton’s brought a little taste from home that was much appreciated. All of our cards had a name and a message on them and those well-wishing thoughts were big with  all the troops.

.

Warrant Officer Langelier is now back in Canada and stationed at CFB Edmonton. He has since his return, forwarded to the Squadron two impressive plaques as a thank you for the squadron’s effort in supporting our troops. One of the plaques was for Warrant Officer Max Lysyk the NCO who suggested the program and the other plaque is now on display in the Squadron’s trophy case. As one might appreciate, there have over the months been a number of emails back and forth and last Friday we had a chance to meet personally with MWO Langelier in Edmonton.  After a tour of the base and the facilities at the Service Battalion’s headquarters he reminded us once again how important this program was to all those who served overseas in Afghanistan and how much our efforts were appreciated.

Thoughts from the Treadmill

.

As I look back at another week, I continue to be amazed at the support we see at the Squadron.  There are a number of organizations and individuals who continue to be generous with their time and money.  Remember there is a donate button on the Squadron’s web page where friends, family and general supporters can donate to the Squadron.  Tax receipts are available for monetary donations.

.

There will be a Duke of Edinburgh meeting during period three for all cadets enrolled in the program.  Please bring your Duke of Ed record book with you as we will be covering some of the items in it.

.

We had some limited open shooting yesterday, I say limited as if we have too many show up then nobody gets to shoot very much.  I am encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by many of our younger shooters.  There will be some presentations made on Monday night of marksmanship badges.  I feel that the future of the Squadron’s shooting team is looking bright.  As promising marksmen are identified at open shooting, they will be invited to participate in some more in depth shooting practices.   There will be more open shooting in the future, please listen at your other activities for announcements.

.

If any of you still have poinsettia order forms that were not turned in last week, we will still accept them tomorrow night.  Please make sure to have the order form and money ready at opening parade.

.

Tomorrow is also the deadline for Lottery Tickets.  Please make sure you have the tickets and money ready to turn in to Mr. Lloyd when you sign in.

Have a great week.

Maj Bliss

Many of Germany’s captured new and experimental aircraft were displayed in an exhibition as part of London’s Thanksgiving week on September 14, 1945. Among the aircraft are a number of jet and rocket propelled planes. Here, a side view of the Heinkel He-162 “Volksjaeger”, propelled by a turbo-jet unit mounted above the fuselage, in Hyde park, in London.
